Cavegirl Volleyball at Hobbs Eagles By Don Eskins The Cavegirl volleyball team will close out 2021 regular season play on Tuesday night, Nov. 2, on the road with a conference game against the District 4A leader Hobbs Eagles. It will be the second meeting of the year between the two schools. The Eagles won the first one 3-0.The Cavegirls defeated the Clovis Wildcats 3-2 on Tuesday (Oct. 26) to push their record up to 6-12 on the year and 2-2 in District 4A play. After winning the first two sets 26-24 and 25-19 they dropped the third and fourth, 23-25 and 12-25, before rallying to win the fifth and deciding set 15-5.It was a victory the Cavegirls needed and expected to get. "We've played Clovis well all season long and we expected to get another win up here tonight," said Cavegirl head coach Bill Niemeier. "But the Wildcats did play us tough." "This win was a really big one for our kids though, it's set them up for a shot at finishing second in the conferece," said the Cavegirl coach. "We can do that with a win over Roswell, at home, on Thursday Oct. 28."With the state tournament just around the corner it appears that only this year's district champion can be assured of a berth in the 2021 Big Dance. "It looks as though Hobbs will win this year's district title. For the rest of us, regardless of how the conference race finishes out, getting a berth in this year's state tournament will be difficult," said Niemeier. "We're all sitting below .500, in the win-loss column, which means that it's unlikely that any of us would receive a berth in this year's tournament. But we can hope. "The Cavegirls can finish no worse than third this year. While that might not sound like much think again. "For the past several years our program has finished last in District 4A play," said Niemeier who is serving out his first year at the helm of the Cavegirl program. "Our girls have definitely improved this year and with the exception of senior Kailyn He stand, they'll all be back next year. I think the future of the program looks very bright. "Last year the Cavegirls won just three games.
