The Cavemen and Cavegirl Cross Country teams logged second-place finishes at the Bob Jackson Invitational in Hobbs on October 12.

The Cavemen amassed 59 points for their day’s work, 25 points behind the invitational champion Hobbs Eagles, who posted a 34.

Rex Reynolds led all Cavemen runners with a fourth-place finish. Reynolds crossed the tape with a time of 17:36.45. Dany Hernandez, with a time of 18:17.21, finished fifth.

The Cavegirls collected 62 points en route to placing second. Clovis, with 21, finished first.

Alyssa Balencia and Audrey Veloz paced the Cavegirl effort. Balencia, posting a time of 22:04.11, finished fifth, while Veloz, who traveled the course in a time of 22:47.42, placed seventh.

While both the Cavemen and Cavegirls performed well in Hobbs, CHS head coach Michael Sims felt his charges were capable of running even better.

“Rather than preparing for the Hobbs Invitational, we’ve been getting ready to compete in the Albuquerque Academy Extravaganza on Saturday, October 19. So, we didn’t expect to see a lot of fast times from our kids this week, “ said CHS cross country coach Michael Sims. “Due to our up-tempo workouts in preparation for the Academy meet, some of our kids were a little tired in Hobbs. The weather, much warmer than we had anticipated, was also a factor.

“But the Hobbs meet was a good one for us,” he said. “Besides the competition, our kids got to preview the course they’ll be running on at the District 4/5A tournament on November 1.”

As for the Academy Extravaganza, Sims said he had a special reason for preparing his kids to compete there for the past two weeks.

“It’s one of New Mexico’s premier cross country meets,” said the CHS coach. “At the meet, our kids will get to see a lot of the competition they’ll be running against at state. It should prove to be invaluable.”
