Cavemen Crunch Mayfield 54-30The Class 5A tenth ranked Carlsbad Cavemen ran past the Mayfield Trojans 54-30 on Tuesday night in a game played here in the Cavern City.The victory upped Carlsbad's record to 6-1 on the year. Mayfield (ranked 16th) fell to 3-6.Carlsbad held on to a 14-7 lead following completion of first quarter play and, after outscoring the Trojans 13-9 in the second, lead 27-16 at the half.In a balanced attack seven Cavemen contributed points during first half play. Out in front were Tylan Gonzales, R. J. Amos, Damian Perez and Evan Campos, each with five.Although the Cavemen did seem to have the game under control Mayfield did make a run in the third period to pull within six points, 27-21, as third quarter action got underway. But that's as close as the Trojans could get. The Cavemen went on to outscore them 17-14 in the third quarter and then shut them out in the fourth 10-0 to pick up the 54-30 win."We got a solid team effort from our kids tonight. But I thought it was our defense that really carried us throughout the game," said Cavemen head coach John Zumbrun. "To hold a good scoring team like Mayfield to just thirty points, and shutting them out in the fourth quarter, says a lot about the effort our kids put out to get the win."Eight Cavemen found their way to the bucket in the victory. Leading the way were double digit scorers Tylan Gonzales with 12 and Evan Campos with 10. Also scoring were R.J. On Tuesday night, in Carlsbad, the Cavegirl basketball team held on to record a 46-42 victory over a very tough and scrappy Goddard Rockets."We had a great first and third quarter," said Cavegirl head coach MattEnloe in assessing his Cavegirl's effort. "However our second and fourth quarters were pretty rough."The Cavegirls jumped out in front of the Rockets, to grab a twelve point 19-7 lead, at the end of the first frame of play. But, after scoring just two points in the second, their lead was cut to just three at the half, 21-18. Carlsbad asserted themselves once again during the third period outscoring the Rockets 13-3 to carry a 34-21 lead into the fourth quarter.
But, after pushing the lead up to 44-26 with just 3:12 remaining in the game, the Rockets went on a 16-2 run before finally falling 46-42.Showing up big for the Cavegirls was Allie Myers. Carlsbad High's Cavemen have split up for competition this weekend. A select few willbe competing in Reno Nevada's Tournament of Champions today (Dec. 17) and tomorrow. Those wrestlers not making the trip to Reno, including the junior varsity, will travel to Roswell on Saturday to compete in the Rio Hondo Invitational. The tournament is set to get underway at 9:30 a.m.No Cavegirls made the trip to Reno this year but they will be competing in the Rio Hondo Invitational also.Reno is ranked as one of the top wrestling tournaments in the nation for high school grapplers. And that's a verygood reason for the Cavemen to be there."We do like taking our kids there because it is one of the premier prep wrestling tournaments in the country. While there, our kids will get to compete against some of the top high school wrestlers in the nation,"said Caveman head coach Joe Bach. "Most of the kids entered in the tournament are either state placers or state champions."Making the trip for the Cavemen are: Marcus Najero-106 lbs., Dallas Dunn-120 lbs., Logan Romero-126 lbs., Matt Najero-138 lbs., Jesse Rodriguez-160 lbs. and Jake Fuentes 182 lbs. While the team may be going in different directions this weekend Bach said his athletes understand that they're all still heading toward the same goal."We're doing everything we can to get our kidsready for our district and state tournaments," said the Caveman coach. "The Rio Hondo Invitational is going to be a great tournament for those kids not competing in Reno. So everybody gets to wrestle a lot this weekend and that's going to help make us allbetter." Logan Ramirez at 126 and Matt Najera at 138 placed third following losses to last year’s state champions in semifinal round action of the tournament.Romero (10-1) defeated Cleveland's Kyle Davy (9-4) in the tournament's third place match. His only loss came via Las Cruces' Avery Atma(5-0) by a fall at 5:13. Najera (4-1) defeated Cobre's Niko Trujillo (5-2) by a 2-0 decision in the tourney's third place match. His only loss came from Tye Barker (8-1) of Centennial by an 0-1 decision. Trujillo defeated Najera in the final of last year's state tournament.Jesse Rodriguez (12-1) at 160 also finished third. Following a loss in the second round to Albuquerque High's Joel Villela (3-2) on a fall at 5:58, Rodriguez rallied to win his next six matches by pins, including a fall over over Atrisco Heritage Academy's Johnathan Casaus (7-3) in 1:47 of the meet's third place match.In Rodriguez's consolation semi-final, en route to finishing third, he pinned Albuquerque High's Joel Villela in 1:38. The same Joel Villela he lost to in the second round.
