New Name, Same Mission

Joe Gurule said his own fitness journey began in 2010.

“One day I looked in the mirror and stepped on the scale, and my heart sank when I read 198 pounds,” he recalled. “I’m not a big guy and had never been that heavy in my life.”

That’s when Gurule realized that he needed to stay consistent to get results, “and that’s when everything changed,” he observed.

Gurule’s workout program began in his garage in Albuquerque in 2011. He was working with neighbors and friends, and anyone else who would let him practice his training methods. He passed his CrossFit certification class in 2012 and moved to Carlsbad in January of 2013.

Core City Strength & Fitness Center originally opened up as a CF Affiliate on June 17, 2013 in a former laundry facility at 405 W. Fox. There were 22 members on opening day and Gurule has consistently added members ever since.

“I've dedicated the past 7 years working with hundreds of people with their goals to get better, stronger, and healthier than they was yesterday, a week ago or 20 years ago,” he said. “There is no better feeling than to experience the progress of our client’s success.”

Recently, Core City separated from its CrossFit affiliation, but the fitness center still focuses on a high-intensity fitness program. The center offers climbing walls, gymnastics rings and other workout options, in addition to the usual fare of weights and exercise bikes.

Gurule did some remodeling during the COVID-19 shutdown and is happy to be back open, as are the facility’s clients.

Gurule said with trainer-led sessions and a restriction of 10-member attendance, members get a semi personal training environment. The restriction of the attendance allows trainers to focus on each member more closely to assure the movement and skill is done correctly.

“We have worked with over 700 clients on their fitness journey. Whether it was to simply to get healthy and fit for everyday activity to the Elite CF competitor,” he said.

Here’s what Gurule said you can expect as a member of Core City Strength & Fitness:

Each session will have a professional trainer’s attention during each hour. Trainers leading sessions work with the members to make sure the work outs are done safely and correctly.

Daily workouts programmed ready for you when you arrive. Each movement can be altered to one’s ability.

Warm up – Get your body warmed up.

Mobilization – Muscle and joint mild stretching.

Skill or Drill & Strength – Focus on the mechanics a particular skill of light lifting, heavy lifting, Olympic style lifting, body weight movements as in push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups and competitor movements of handstand walks, handstand push-ups, bar and ring muscle-ups among many other movements.

Metabolic Conditioning (Met-Con) – This is the Daily Work Out, it will consist movements you can perform at your own quick pace. Goal paced to keep your heart rate up for a certain amount of time to burn calories and increase condition, stamina, endurance, cardiovascular, agility, strength, speed, balance, and power.

“Our Trainers are there at all times critiquing and advising of performance and corrections,” Gurule added.

Core City Strength & Fitness is now celebrating its 7th year in Carlsbad. Promotional rates exist for new members. Free consulting is also offered, and bringing this article to the center will come with a 10% discount.

“As I look at how far Core City and I have come there is still many ways to grow and progress,” Gurule said. “Thanks to all the members that believe in Core City and the experience we bring each and every day to them. I'll continue teaching as long as you continue to believe in Core City Strength & Fitness!"
