CHS Basketball Teams Tipoff New SeasonBy Don Eskins Both of Carlsbad High School's basketball programs will open up play for the 2021-22 cage seasonthis week.The Cavemen, who finished out theirCovid shortened spring season at 8-3, will play host to the Organ Mt. Knights on Monday, Nov. 22, in a game set to tipoff at 7 p.m.Taking the floor first will be the C-Team at 4:00 followed by the junior varsity at 5:30.Head coach John Zumbrun, who assumed the reigns of the Cavemen basketball program last year after several successful years at the helm of the Cavegirl program, says his troops are looking forward to the new season."Our first official day of practice was on Monday. But our kids have been getting ready for the start of the new season for quite some time through our athletic period," said Zumbrun. "No doubt about it, our kids are ready to go."The Cavemen will return nine players off last year's team. Three of those returnees, Rj Amos, Damian Perez and Devin McWright, were starters.Organ Mt. will enter Monday night's clash following a 4-8 campaign last year.The Cavemen will take the floor again on Tuesday nightwhen they collide with the Gadsden Panthers, in Gadsden. The Panthers were 2-10 last year. Game time for the varsity tiff is set for 7 p.m. The C-Team will take the floor first at 4 p.m. followed by the junior varsity at 5:30.The Cavemen will be at home again on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 23, at 2:30 for a meeting with the Alamogordo Tigers. The Tigers were 10-2 last season. "During the summer we played over thirty games, and in a very tough tournament in Denver,our girls went 5-1.""As for getting ready to take onOrgan Mt.,our girls are ready to go," he said.The Cavegirls will return thirteen playersfrom last year's 7-3 team, including four starters.Back for another run at a state title are seniors Morgan Boatwright (PF-C) and Alexa Dugan (SG). They'll be joined by juniors Allie Myers (PG-SG) and Mariana Sepulveda (PF-PG).The Carlsbad girls will make their home debut on Tuesday night (Nov. 23) when they entertain El Paso Pebble Hills. El Paso was 7-11 last year but are off to a 2-0 start this season.Game time for the varsity is set for 7 p.m. The JV's will take the floor at 5:30.The Cavegirls will also be at home on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 27, when they'll entertain the Alamogordo Tigers. Staff: Head Coach Matt Enloe-Assistant Coach Wes Boatwright.CHS Girls 3rd -Boys 6th at Hobbs Swim MeetBy Don EskinsCarlsbad High School's swim teams got off to a great start on the new year, at last Saturday's Hobbs Invitational.The Cavegirls collected 66 points to finish in a tie for third place with Lubbock Cooper. The Cavemen, with 32 points, finished sixth.
CHS head coach Moranda Madero couldn't have been happier with the results."With fifteen schools showing up to compete, this year's Hobbs Invitational was really a big meet," said Madero. "But we got some great efforts from our kids. Overall, when you combine both the boys and girls scores, they placed sixth."The Cavegirls Sophia Corder and Colette Dhenin had big days. Corder raced to first place finishes in both the 200 Freestyle (2:05.72) and the 50 Freestyle (26.05). Dhenin, with a time of 58.40, placed first in the 100 Freestlye.The Cavegirls 200 Medley Relay team, comprised of Payton Jones, Olivia Jang, Corder and Dhenin, also swam well placing second with a time of 2:05.65."We have a lot of new swimmers on our girls team this year and they all did awesome," said Madero. "Colette Dhenin especially had a big day. Alongwith her first place finish in the 100 Freestyle she also picked up three seconds. Her showing in the 100 Freestyle was also good enough to qualify her for state.""We also got some good efforts from the boys," said the CHS coach. "Zechariah Char had some outstanding swims, especially in his individual events. In his 50 Freestyle he improved by .16 seconds and in the breaststroke he cut 1.52 seconds off his time."Char finished third in the breaststroke with a time of 1:10.59.Next up for the Cavemen and Cavegirl swim teams will be the Clovis Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 20."Our kids have been working hard, both in and out of the pool, and they're showing improvement every day," said Madero.
