Let me introduce you to the Rotary Club of Carlsbad Jessica On sure President, Rotary Club of Carlsbad Rotary is a service organization that boasts1.2 million members in clubs around the world. Founded more than 100 years ago by a group of professionals in Chicago, Illinois, Rotary has brought together men and women dedicated to improving their communities, providing humanitarian service, championing high ethical standards and promoting good will. The Rotary Club of Carlsbad received its charter in 1925, and today we are 73members strong. Our members are men and women of all ages, races, vocations and skills. Among our members you’ll find lawyers, pharmacists, clergymen and educators. We even boast in our ranks the odd retired professional and young entrepreneur. Regardless of profession, what binds us together is a belief in the foundational Four Way Test and a passion for making a difference at home and worldwide. Together Rotarians have logged hundreds of hours of volunteer service. The Rotary Club of Carlsbad builds parks, supports area nonprofits and has raised thousands of dollars in scholarship funds for local students. I’m very proud that our members are equally enthusiastic about removing litter from the side of Eddy County highway sand public spaces as they are flipping pancakes at the Annual Pancake Day held each February. Through our Rotary Youth Exchange, Rotarians have hosted students from a score of other countries, helping them to feel welcomed in the U.S. and the Carlsbad community. And every year youth from Carlsbad and Loving are invited to participate in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards(RYLA), a week-long program which fosters leadership skills and self-confidence. And the work of Rotarians isn’t limited to Carlsbad. In the last five years, Carlsbad Rotarians as a club and individually have supported international projects which provide clean water to vulnerable communities in Guatemala, safe guarded the most vulnerable youths with an investment in dental hygiene in Latin American, and furnished an empty parochial school with chairs, desks and book sin remote communities in Guatemala. Recently, Africa was declared wild Polio free, a feat celebrated by Rotarians who the world over and for generations have led the way in eradicating the dangerous illness that once affected millions of children. Rotarians are “People of Action.” I invite you to be one too. Start by learning more about how to become a member of the Rotary Club of Carlsbad.
