Carlsbad unites to celebrate Radiologic Technologist Week! By Steven Payne and Melody Hall Carlsbad is a close knit community, it’s one of the characteristics we noted right away upon our arrival from the huge DFW area of Texas. The locals are helpful, encouraging and animosity seems to be non-existent throughout this town. Whether we are shopping at La Tienda or walking the town square, kindness is easy to see. As we embarked into November, a cause for recognition of Healthcare heroes was noted. November 8th through the 14th marked the celebration of National Radiologic Technologist Week! NRTW commemorates the discovery of the x-ray while celebrating the valuable contributions of the imaging medical professionals as a whole. The healthcare community of Carlsbad noted the sense of camaraderie as we prepped for this spectacular week of celebration. While most don’t realize it, Radiology history goes all the way back to 1895! On November 8, 1895, Wilhelm Roentgen took an x-ray of his wife’s hand starting x-ray history. Enter the era of diagnosing fractures, broken bones, and other ailments of the human body! Radiologic Technologists play a crucial role when it comes to diagnosing a variety of diseases. Hospitals and medical facilities in the United States employ over 330,000 registered radiologic technologists. Radiologic Technologists earn their credentialing from the American Registry of the Radiologic Technologists. The Vice-President of the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT), Daniel Gonzales RT(R), resides in Carlsbad and is the Director of Radiology at Carlsbad Medical Center. The community really joined together to make this week come to fruition. We recognize the fine folks over at Lowes Home Improvement and Albertsons Grocery who donated graciously to the cause. Snake River Farms of Boise, Idaho provided us two Gold Grade Wagyu Briskets in response to healthcare heroes and NRTW. These are absolutely the finest briskets available. Offered in limited quantities, Gold Grade briskets are rich with the highest level of marbling offered by Snake River Farms. These premium cuts were ideal for 14 hours of smoking for some amazing flavor! Reyna Ochoa at Lowes helped us out with the smoking task in the way of a Pit Boss Smoker. Metro Food Services food carrier kept all the hearty food deliciously warm. A most spectacular cake, prepared by Albertsons, was appreciated by all! Hint, if you are in the market for a buttercream frosted cake, ask to speak with Monica Kennedy, the bakery assistant manager. Thank you to David Betty, store manager, and Bobbie Calk, bakery manager, who helped make the wonderful cake a reality. While I provided the smoking skills necessary for the brisket, Melody RT(R) made her famous candied baked beans. Cynthia (RN, Director of Cardiac Cath Lab at Carlsbad Medical Center) and Albert Madrid provided A sado as an additional main dish. Mike de Guzman, RT(R) continued the teamwork by providing additional sides to compliment the food. As we prepped the Radiology break room for ensemble, we could feel the excitement in the air! Balloons, streamers, and glitter abound, Melody and I decorated up a storm! Unity amongst staff and co-workers was evident as the food was served and conversation exchanged. Laura Gorecki and Melody Hall proved to be quite the promotional team inviting everyone to join in on the festivities. Thank you to Rick Gonzales RT(R)(CT), Cardiac Cath Lab manager, for his continued support. With news this week of Covid-19 numbers on the rise, we want to remind everyone to stay safe out there! Always wear your mask, frequently wash hands and practice cough etiquette. While we stay safe ourselves, we also will remind Carlsbad that the local restaurant scene is doing a valiant job at delivery and pick-up orders. As I have come to know how this community stands by one another, let’s stand by our small businesses and do all that we can do to help them maintain growth.
