Cross Country teams to run in RuidosoBy Don EskinsThe Cavemen and Cavegirl Cross Country teams will be heading to the mountains on Saturday (Oct. 2) to compete in the Ruidoso Invitational. The meet is scheduled to get underway at 10 a.m.Head coach Dave Gonzalez says, for his troops, the challenge will be unlike any they've faced this year."It's going to be a very different kind of meet for them in Ruidoso," said Gonzalez. "The altitude, the weather and the course itself will offer them a whole new set of challenges. But they're all looking forward to them. They're especially looking forward to getting out of the desert for a little bit."Carlsbad High will be headed to the mountains following last week's good showing at the Organ Mt. Invitational in Las Cruces.Gonzalez was especially pleased with the performances turned in by a very young group of Cavemen runners.Four of the Cavemen's top six runners were underclassmen. Freshmen Isaac Williams and Sawyer Johnson finished one and two for CHS with eighth grader Liam Nelson crossing the tape fourth and sophomore Luke Peters fifth. The Cavemen ran hard and they ran close at the Organ Mt. meet with only fifteen seconds separating their top five runners."We're in a rebuilding year," saidGonzalez. "So it's especially nice for us to see our underclassman doing so well. They work hard and their times keep improving. If they continue to keep working, as they have this year, the future for our program looks very bright."On the girls side junior Makayla Jefferson continues to post good scores for the Cavegirls. "Makayla placed 22nd in a field of eighty girls at Las Cruces so she finished among those at the top," said the CHS coach. "She's run very well for us this year and we're expecting to see her do well at district."Due to conflicts in scheduling, only two Cavegirls were able to make the trip to Las
